The position offers an excellent opportunity to play a vital role on the Marathon Petroleum Company income tax team.  The role encompasses all aspects of the company’s income tax provision; the incumbent will hold a lead role with the development, analysis, and review of annual effective tax rates for monthly and quarterly tax accruals as well as the annual year-end accrual for Marathon Petroleum Corporation and its subsidiaries in accordance with ASC 740.  This includes development of tax provision calculations utilizing CorpTax Provision software, review and reconciliation in SAP of tax provision entries, return-to-provision adjustments, uncertain tax positions, valuation allowances, tax basis balance sheets, and the preparation of traditional tax footnote disclosures in quarterly and annual reports.  Other general tax duties may be added to the position’s responsibilities. 



  • Assist in the technical analysis and financial reporting for all ASC-740 processes for publicly traded entities under MPC or MPLX ownership and/or control
    • Actively interface with each of the Tax Director – Income Tax roles to effectively understand the transactional activities that impact the tax provision, effectively assist in the planning for all aspects of the tax provision process, its correct quarterly execution
    • Interface with the independent auditor to effectively facilitate the quarterly review process and the annual financial statement audit processes;
    • Assist with the management of all key and non-key income tax controls for the tax provision;
    • Interface effectively with Accounting personnel especially including detail discussions and planning for all non-standard transactions occurring in the reporting periods to obtain full and complete understanding of all transactional, accounting method, or other changes occurring and the effect on the provision computation
    • Maintain a complete, accurate, and auditable set of books and records, including the needed work products of the Tax Directors’ work teams, to correctly and timely prepare the ASC-740 recordation processes, including tax basis balance sheet maintenance
  • Assist in the management of all Income Tax Technology processes and improvements for MPLX and MPC, including SAP fixed assets, CorpTax income tax compliance and provision processing, integration of data and reporting from SAP, Oracle, and S-4 Hana and any other ERP systems for income tax compliance and provision purposes (Federal, state, international)
  • Assist the Tax Manager – Income Tax Provision with ASC-740 planning for M&A or disposition activity, especially as it relates to changes in the tax provision reporting or modeling processes, determination of impact on earnings per share or the BPA forecasting processes



  • B.S. Accounting, but highly prefer a Master degree in Accounting (MAcc, MBA, MS) or Taxation (MST)
  • CPA required
  • 7-10 years’ experience in Big 4 or at public traded companies in ASC-740
    • Prefer some experience managing a team
    • 3-5 years minimum corporation income tax compliance experience
    • 5-7 progresssive, quality years ASC-740 preparation/review experience
