Position Summary:


  • The Partnership Federal Income Tax team is responsible for federal partnership income tax compliance requirements for Marathon Petroleum Corporation, principally consisting of MPLX LP, a publicly traded master limited partnership. 
  • In consultation with the Tax Law team, the Technical Consultant is responsible for tax research and modeling pertaining to technical partnership tax issues for MPLX LP and other related partnerships.
  • The Technical Consultant position is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and ensuring the partnership income tax compliance is performed in accordance with the master limited partnership agreement and the applicable tax law.
  • The Technical Consultant partners with other Tax Organization sections and interfaces with Accounting, Financial Planning, Business Development, and Internal Audit, as well as with outside parties including the MLP’s financial audit and MLP tax service teams. 
  • The Technical Consultant creates a team environment and helps lead the training of team members on technical tax issues.



Job Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for conducting and reviewing the analysis of changes to partnership income tax law.  The Technical Consultant possesses the detailed knowledge needed to identify specific processes and procedures needed to comply with all relative tax laws and regulations.  When new tax laws, regulations, and regulatory guidance are issued, the Technical Consultant assists in studying the new law and government issued guidance to be able to discuss the effect of the changes with the Partnership Income Tax Operations Manager for implementation to ensure the partnerships remain in compliance. 
  • The Technical Consultant may work directly with the partnership K-1 systems service provider to ensure the K-1 processing system calculates the MLPs K-1 investors’ information correctly.  The Technical Consultant, with the direction of the Partnership Tax Supervisor and the Partnership Income Tax Operations Manager, helps ensure the timely processing of K-1s.  This includes ensuring the IRS tax package is issued in accordance with the tax laws and regulatory guidance in effect at time of issuance. 
  • Working with the Partnership Tax Supervisor, Partnership Income Tax Operations Manager, the tax personnel of non-operated partnerships, the Technical Consultant helps review all partnership agreements and helps inform third party operators about MPLX’s tax information needs.  The Technical Consultant maintains effective relationships with third party tax information providers.
  • Responsibilities may include the review and preparation of tax return work-papers.  The more complex tax compliance tasks may be assigned to the Technical Consultant and reviewed by the Partnership Tax Supervisor and/or Partnership Income Tax Operations Manager.  Tasks where established procedures exist are performed by staff tax analysts and reviewed by the Technical Consultant or Partnership Tax Supervisor. 
  • The Technical Consultant may also help review the preparation of the annual Schedules K-1, including monthly and annual schedules of book to taxable income, net cash equivalents, and financial and tax basis balance sheets.
  • May help review and reconcile inputs and outputs from the MLP database, including documenting compliance with internal controls.
  • May help review tax fixed asset activities as supported in the Marathon internal and MLP K-1 service providers systems.
  • May help review SAP tax depreciation and gain/loss calculations, analyzing partnership depreciation and gains/losses to partners.
  • Provide analysis and information required for business development and tax planning activities.
  • Interface with Marathon Petroleum and MPLX Accounting Organization personnel to obtain and understand financial data and transactions.
  • May help investigate and respond to public unitholder inquiries.
  • Assist other income tax teams through resource sharing as needed (Corporate, State, International, Provision)



Education and Experience:


Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required, a master’s degree in accounting or taxation strongly preferred

Certifications: Certified Public Accountant is strongly preferred and will be required for promotion to manager positions

Computer Proficiencies:  SAP, Oracle, and Corptax income tax compliance and provision software experience is preferred. A strong proficiency in Excel is required.

Work Experience:  The Technical Consultant will have a minimum of 5 years of recent federal partnership income tax compliance experience (MLP experience preferred but not required) and 7 or more total years of corporate and/or partnership income tax compliance experience overall.  The individual selected for this position will establish themselves as the “go-to” person for the area they are asked to lead.
