Overview:

Depending on experience level and interest, engineering interns/co-ops at Marathon Petroleum Company LP (MPC) are involved in diverse and challenging projects. Interns/co-ops participate as integral team members, providing technical service on various refining processes.  Projects and tasks will vary dependent on the business needs.  MPC seeks engineers from a wide range of technical disciplines to meet its growing business requirements.

Responsibilities:

Process / Technical Service: In this job, you may be working on a variety of projects in the Technical Services Department that put your classroom experience as a Chemical Engineer into practice. The experience will provide you with a better understanding of the refining environment and technical aspects of the refinery. Past projects/duties have included the following: perform process engineering calculations concerning the various process units in the refinery; perform heat exchanger studies to determine heat transfer coefficients; complete projects to provide recommendations for improvements to refinery process and equipment.

Operations Research: In this role, you may help develop planning, blending, scheduling, and process models for refinery engineers. The models are used to optimize crude oil purchasing, refinery production, blending and finished product scheduling, and optimization of refinery production. Typical college co-op assignments include:  validation of production data and mass balancing, process modeling, and development of graphical interfaces of refinery process units.

Environmental: In this job, you will be applying the engineering principles and calculations learned in school to various environmental projects. This job will give you exposure to the majority of process units in the refinery because you will be working on environmental projects that involve the compliance of the entire refinery. In addition, you will get a broad knowledge of the various environmental laws that are applicable to refineries and what it takes to maintain compliance with those laws. Past projects/duties have included the following: perform process calculations for the Risk Management Plan, which will include taking surveys of refinery process units; work on various process engineering projects within a Wastewater Treatment Plant; participate in inspections and/or testing that is conducted by federal, state, or local officials.

Products Control / Economics: In this role, you will use the knowledge gained in your Chemical Engineering classes and apply them to a wide array of projects including operations, blending, and refinery economics. You will gain an understanding of how a tank farm is operated and how gasoline and other products are prepared and shipped to customers. In addition, you will gain some exposure to the overall economics of the refinery and how operating decisions are made based upon these economics. Past projects/duties have included the following: analyze refinery process flow data and compare to recommended optimum levels - this will help in identifying equipment failures which cause variances in capacity from the optimum levels; update information on gasoline blends and tank samples in preparation for an annual blender waiver audit; develop applications to summarize process data in a more convenient manner.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be majoring in Chemical Engineering.
  • We hire for the following locations: Canton, OH; Catlettsburg, KY; Cincinnati, OH; Detroit, MI; Findlay, OH; Garyville, LA; Robinson, IL and two locations in Texas City, TX.
