Overview:

Are you a self-starter looking for a challenging opportunity, where you can gain hands-on experience in an HR generalist role? Marathon Petroleum Company (MPC) can help you get there. Marathon offers a number of opportunities within our Human Resources organization where you can add value and grow professionally. You will have the opportunity to work in an autonomous environment that fosters coaching and support. We are seeking students currently enrolled in a graduate program in Human Resources and Labor & Industrial Relations.

Responsibilities:

The Human Resources Consultant Intern’s primary role is to act as a strategic business partner and HR subject-matter consultant to the organization.  HR interns are truly a part of the team with meaningful assignments and responsibilities throughout their experience. In most organizations you are as likely to be in the field environment getting to understand the work of hourly and salary individual contributors and dealing with issues as to be in a conference room presenting to organizational leadership.

As a strategic business partner you will have opportunities to interface with client groups on issues which may include performance management, employee relations, compensation, recruiting, training and development activities, diversity initiatives, policy application and administration, program facilitation, data analysis, workforce/succession planning, and community relations while building employee relations. Interns may also be involved with short-term projects based on the current needs of the organization.  The project may be team-oriented or individually driven to give the intern an opportunity to develop a finished product and presentation near the conclusion of the internship.

CAREER PROGRESSION:

An initial full-time assignment will generally involve a generalist role with opportunity for orientation and training, project-oriented assignments in corporate Human Resources, and/or temporary assignments at operating locations. At MPC we allow employees to own their career development instead of going through a formal leadership development program.  Through that ownership, an employee’s career may include lateral and promotional assignments in various business units or specialist areas within Human Resources.
