The Corporate Federal Income Tax Compliance group is responsible for analyzing, reviewing all material federal corporate income tax return positions for Marathon Petroleum Corporation and its subsidiaries. This position analyzes activity that flows into the federal returns for the Marathon Petroleum Corporation return and affiliates to provide the technical income tax basis for the tax position taken for that activity.  This role collaborates with internal and external organizations to analyze and report on changes to accounting methods, book or tax based, writes memos to demonstrate the tax position, its validity under the law and how MPC will incorporate this position into the filed tax returns. This position reports to the Corporate Federal Income Tax Manager.





  • Coordinate, review and analyze federal tax for the entities that are consolidated into the Marathon Petroleum Corporation & Affiliates corporation income tax return and the Marathon Petroleum Company LP partnership return of income.
  • Liaise with accounting, operations, and other departments to ensure the efficient, accurate, and timely determination of tax positions to be used in the filing of income tax returns
  • Accounting and reporting – Assist with review and preparation of tax provisions and tax forecasts on a quarterly and annual basis. 
  • Provides the technical analysis of the effect on current tax positions resulting from federal income tax legislative proposals, changes in tax law, court cases or regulation.  Coordinate with the supervisor – federal corporate income tax, to determine the process to generate the relevant calculations of the federal tax impacts of enacted federal legislation, or of different tax positions to be taken under current law.
  • Work on time sensitive, confidential projects including directly supporting Business Develop and Tax Law.  Support the determinations and explanations of federal income tax impacts of business development proposals and contemplated merger, acquisition, and divestiture transactions.  Assist directly with tax planning and assist with or prepare federal tax modeling efforts for M&A or tax law changes.
  • Communicate and interact with outside auditors and tax advisors as needed for technical explanations of tax positions taken in the tax provision or returns.
  • Expand tax knowledge and maintain certification by completion of continuing education, keep up on the details of all federal tax law matters including IRS promulgations, regulations, tax legislation, court cases as needed for Federal Corporate compliance and planning activity.
  • Must be able to write cohesive tax memos and provide detailed analysis of transactions and how those are impacted by federal tax law.





  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required, a master’s degree in accounting or taxation strongly preferred; MBA or JD would be beneficial.
  • Certified Public Accountant is strongly preferred and will be required for promotion to management positions.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant federal corporate income tax compliance experience, BIG 4 or large publicly traded manufacturing company experience required. 
  • Demonstrated ability to use tax research tools such as OneSource, CCH, RIA or BNA is required. 
  • SAP, Oracle, and CorpTax income tax compliance and provision software experience is preferred.
  • A strong proficiency in Excel is required. 
  • Experience with large scale general ledger accounting systems preferred. 
  • Ability to utilize Alteryx strongly preferred.





  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, excellent in both written and verbal ability to communicate complex subjects
  • Ability to research and fully document tax issues; ability to effectively share knowledge.
  • Must have desire and ability to learn, grow in tax knowledge and application and lead a team.
  • The individual selected for this position will establish themselves as the “go-to” federal income tax technical lead.
