Unit Process Engineers (Chemical Engineers):

Process Engineers provide technical support for the plant operations. They will be assigned a specific unit or

units within the Refinery with responsibilities of daily monitoring and troubleshooting of their areas, process

optimization, design and development of capital projects as well as major modifications to existing units.


Process Engineers will apply state-of-the-art technology with regard to process simulation and optimization.


They will recommend programs and procedures to increase the economic efficiency of refining operations.


They work in a team environment with line operators and engineers to maintain and troubleshoot control

system problems. 


Responsibilities of a refining engineer may include the following:



a.             Daily Process Monitoring – Communicate unit performance, optimization opportunities, environmental performance.  Assist troubleshooting efforts with unit upsets, product quality incidents, not meeting production plans, etc.

b.             Small to middle capital project process engineering support

c.             Maintain current work lists with priorities

d.             KPI included as part of routine reporting (WABT curve, $ budget, etc)

e.             Manage catalyst performance and coordinate catalyst change timing. 

f.              Support unit operation with in environmental limits

g.             Develop justification and work scope for TAR and routine maintenance– specifically catalyst changeout, exchanger cleaning, furnace pigging

h.             Support / review Operations procedures for start-up and shutdown

i.              Review / approve vendor chemical programs

j.              Inspect vessel internals for proper installation / tolerances of components

k.             Monitor / approve catalyst loading

l.              Publish Recommendations memo’s and turnaround reports

m.            Evaluate need to request more samples for troubleshooting

n.             Daily interaction / communication with Board Operators– spend time on the unit

o.             Provide after-hours support when appropriate – emergency call out

p.             Alarm rationalization participation

q.             Understand controls logic, and any APC (and help develop)



a.             Work with Area Team to develop project ideas and submit PRF

a.             PRF should be submitted with a memo detailing economic benefits and justification

b.             Work with controls group to develop / implement APC

c.             Provide process design basis



a.             Monthly Reports – Review unit KPI’s for the month and include analyses when appropriate with supporting data.  Include unit performance on key economic drivers.  Include recommendations for performance and reliability improvements and compliance with environmental permits.

b.             Advisory Group Calls / Face to Face Technology Meetings – participate / attend

c.             Schedule reviews with vendors / technologists

d.             Work with technologists to understand and implement unit best practices

e.             Set outside feedstock properties and discuss opportunity feeds with Product Control

f.              Know / understand the process fully in order to identify constraints

g.             Work with Product Control for setting appropriate unit targets

h.             Unit yield monitoring and optimization

i.              Key decision maker for selecting programs, catalyst loads, etc.

j.              Communicate with Product Control and other relevant groups about:

i.              Catalyst budget curves / current performance

ii.             Operation against / changing process constraints

iii.            Unit yields vs LP – we monitor accuracy of PIMS yields

k.             Discuss and contribute to unit operating forecast and daily target changes

l.              Understand Product Control targets and ensure proper implementation / understanding by ops

m.            Support Product Control on required rigorous model runs as necessary



a.             CPV/NTE Maintenance and Operating Limits support

b.             Lead/Participate in the MOC process

c.             Perform environmental calculations (Leaks, Max intended inventory, etc.)

d.             Lead CAT1 and 2 Investigations for process related events

e.             Participate in unit HAZOP

f.              Support instrumentation PSI and troubleshooting (Thermowell calculations, orifices, etc.)

g.             Provide / approve special chemical procedures


Required (Minimum) Qualifications:

• Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution.

•Must be authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.

• A valid driver's license is required.


Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a refinery setting as a process engineer.
