Role Summary:

 

The Fire Protection Engineer drives implementation with MPC Fire Protection and Safety standards to achieve strategic HESS objectives and compliance with applicable policies, standards and regulations by: identifying and proactively addressing fire, safety, and loss prevention issues while effectively communicating with site personnel regarding fire protection equipment, projects, standards, and programs.

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Act as a technical advisor for Marathon Galveston Bay Refinery (GBR) fire and safety challenges and lead opportunities for improvement
  • Support the line organization and refinery functional teams via direct involvement in routine and non-routine activities
  • Review, develop, and revise applicable site fire protection policies and procedures as necessary
  • Interpret fire protection and safety standards, codes, and regulations to support site operations, TAR’s, and contracted projects
  • Maintain communications with Marathon Fire Department, Personal Safety, Process Safety, and other Marathon business units to share and collect best practices
  • Provide guidance on the development, implementation, and evaluation of site fire protection and safety systems, procedures, life safety, fire suppression and detection design, and loss prevention programs 
  • Perform review on fire protection and safety systems and practices at the GBR, providing subsequent recommendations as necessary
  • As required, provide audits and inspections related to areas of fire protection and safety responsibility and/or expertise
  • Perform and facilitate incident investigations based on severity of incident as necessary  
  • Identify fire protection and safety improvement opportunities and make recommendations for corrective actions
  • Interact with external regulatory agencies and auditors when necessary
  • Respond to emergencies as a firefighter/hazmat technician and be available to provide technical advice during emergency responses.
  • Attend all required training to maintain active status on GBR Fire Department

 

 

 

 

 

 

Required Skills/Education/Work Experience

 

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology or equivalent formal background/education in Fire & Safety Engineering or related advanced degree is required.
  2. 4-10 years’ experience in providing fire protection engineering services/technical advice in petrochemical/refining process operations or related industry;
  3. A working knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM), Fire Detection/Suppression Systems, Flammable and Combustible Liquids classification, Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (29CFR1910 & 1926), NFPA, and API standards.
  4. Graduate Safety Professional (GSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification required
  5. Proven results for facilitating team discussion to deliver practical solutions to complex site fire & safety challenges.
  6. HazMat Technician required
  7. A working knowledge of fire water system hydraulic modeling
  8. A working knowledge of AutoCad.
  9. Candidate must be recognized and acknowledged as having effective interpersonal, team, and communication capabilities, good problem-solving skills and be results oriented.
