The St. Paul Park Refinery has a full-time opening for a senior Piping Inspector, an exempt position of which reports to the Inspection Supervisor.  The inspector assures that company resources are directed and utilized safely and effectively in the equipment condition assessment and inspection functions. The incumbent is a refinery specialist for inspection to ensure that equipment maintenance and inspection activities are conducted in full compliance with established laws, codes, standards and procedures. The inspector will document and report findings and develop recommendations.





  • Develop and execute inspection plans for fixed equipment based on service, design, condition, jurisdictional requirements, and inspection history.
  • Collaborate on projects with the Operations, Engineering, Maintenance and Reliability Departments.
  • With the assistance of the Inspection Supervisor, and in collaboration with Engineering, develop and maintain comprehensive written inspection department procedures, guidelines, and work instructions. Provide oversight of the facility QA manual to ensure effective utilization and compliance.
  • Provide support for routine maintenance, unit shutdowns, and turnarounds through work scope development. Minimize non-budgeted, unplanned repairs identified during turnarounds by promoting thorough and well-planned, on-stream inspections prior to turnaround.
  • Understand critical process variables that affect equipment reliability.  Direct inspection activities to areas of the refinery based on changing operating conditions.
  • Review recommendations based on findings, options, and risk assessments with management, Operations, and Maintenance.
  • Facilitate assurance program by auditing site’s work in areas such as, but not limited to: non-destructive examination (NDE), visual inspection, data input into IDMS, PMI, welding and heat treatment.
  • Document inspection records and findings in Marathon’s Inspection Data Management System.
  • Provides oversight of the facility cooling towers inspection and repairs.
  • Act as on-call maintenance representative on a scheduled basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.





  • Minimum High School Diploma or G.E.D
  • Minimum of 10 years inspection experience.
  • API certifications 570 required.
  • Excellent written, organization, and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient with Microsoft Office products as well as Corrosion Monitoring related software.




  • Experience working with API 510, API 653, CWI and/or ASNT Level II (UTT, RTFI, MT, PT).
  • Knowledgeable in damage mechanisms that affect refinery equipment including fundamentals of corrosion, basic forms of corrosion, and methods of inspection for detection.
  • Experience working with Meridium and Risk Based Inspection (RBI).
  • Experience working in a refinery setting a plus.
