Summary

The mission of the MechanicalEngineer is to provide technical expertise and project management services to the Area Team and Engineering Department.  The following are general roles & responsibilities that the Mechanical Engineer will typically complete while fulfilling this mission.  Additional assignments and responsibilities may be required depending on an individual  Engineer's knowledge, experience, and work load.

 

Responsibilities 

 

HES&S / PSM / PSI

  • Complete all required training on time.
  • Participate in unit and project PHA’s (Whatif’s and HAZOP’s)
  • Complete / participate in incident investigations
  • Complete PSM recommendations on time.
  • Review all projects with Safety during the feasibility and design phases to:
    • Ensure prjects comply with safety standards and codes
    • Identify ptential ergonomic issues.
    • Ensure engineering cntrols are fully utilized.
  • Complete an Environmental Review for every project to determine permit and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure Management of Change (MOC) process is followed for all projects.
  • Participate in emergency response Planning Section as necessary.
  • Understand and apply IRD’s Safety Procedures (SP’s).
  • Complete incident investigations / root cause analyses as assigned.

Area / Project Team Support

  • Review project list with the Area Team on a regular basis to help prioritize the project list.
  • Complete scope, design, and constructability reviews with the Area Team for all projects to make sure the project meets the Teams needs including hourly personnel in both Maintenance and Operations.
  • Review and approve relief valve isolation forms as needed
  • Assist Area Maintenance and Procurement in specifying piping, valves, and engineered equipment.
  • Assist with MOC’s for projects completed by the Area Team.
  • Provide engineering and design support for unit shutdowns and turnarounds.
  • Attend Area Team meetings. Be an active participant, champion MPMP and POTP

Design / Reliability

  • Understand and apply engineering codes and specs to ensure project designs meet applicable standards (RAGAGEP).
  • Review equipment designs with Reliability to identify potential problems or areas for improvement.
  • Review designs with Tech Services to ensure process requirements are met.
  • Work with Reliability to develop engineered solutions for equipment with reliability issues.
  • Complete peer reviews for QA/QC on process and mechanical design for inhouse projects as required (i.e. verify process conditions comply with ANSI/ASME applicable codes and Marathon Refining Standard Specifications, hydraulics, PSV pressure drops etc).

Project Management / Controls

  • Use the MPMP process to develop and implement projects.
  • Manage Plan of the Plan (POTP).
  • Maintain the EcoSys database for all projects.
  • Maintain a prioritized list of jobs that includes capital budget projects, HES&S projects, and Area Team priorities.
  • Coordinate project work with outside engineering firms.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Organize project team to meet project deliverables.
  • Ensure projects are properly documented and all process safety information (PSI) and mechanical integrity information is updated.
  • Monitor and control the cost and schedule in all phases of projects.
  • Control scope creep on approved projects.  Use the RFC process to review and approve potential scope changes.
  • Coordinate procurement of engineered and bulk material for all projects.
  • Assist with developing and submitting the IRD Capital Budgets.

 

Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years post degree engineering experience in the refining or petrochemical industry is preferred.
