POSITION SUMMARY:

The Safety Supervisor plans, manages, and directs the activities of the Safety Professionals and Technicians.  The Safety Supervisor works with the Group Safety Supervisor to develop and implement relevant and timely Refining Standard Practices for emerging safety regulations and initiatives. The Safety Supervisor supports the Refinery’s commitment for continuous improvement of Environmental, Health, Safety and Security performance.  The Safety Supervisor evaluates personnel and fosters the technical safety knowledge, safety leadership, and career development of their staff.   

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, refining industry practices, and MPC initiatives by developing and supervising the implementation of safety policies and procedures, implementing corporate safety initiatives, and evaluating compliance with safety policies and procedures applicable to the Area Teams, Projects and TAR.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of refinery processes, engineering controls, administrative controls, injury & illness controls, and new safety developments that will impact the refinery.
  • Provide timely and accurate guidance to ES&S leadership and leaders of the areas they support on all safety matters impacting their areas of responsibility.
  • Supervise and support Safety Professionals and Technicians through setting annual goals (Max V) and objectives including mentoring/coaching, providing development opportunities, conducting performance workbook reviews and annual evaluations, and assisting in the department hiring process.
  • Provide Safety Professionals or Technicians with the required tools and resources to accomplish department goals, including utilization of corporate safety resources, consultants and contractors to facilitate solutions to complex safety issues.
  • Strategically distribute staff workloads and ensure that programs and project deadlines are met. Maintain assigned workloads in a flexible environment to meet the changing needs of the refinery or regulatory mandates
  • Support the ongoing implementation of Safety Leadership programs and auditing tools to build and sustain a strong personal and process safety culture.
  • Communicate expectations to safety staff and evaluate individual performance versus expectations to determine the areas of strength and opportunities for improvement. Apprise personnel of their performance status in a timely manner.
  • Coach and mentor staff in development of communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills so that appropriate work relationships can be developed for customers, consultants, contractors and other work associates to assist in championing safety programs and initiatives.
  • Direct Safety staff to develop and deliver safety training based on new safety policies, procedures, and initiatives.
  • Support emergency response and preparedness for the Kenai Refinery.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s in Safety or equivalent degree
  • 4-10 years related experience in Safety
  • Refining industry experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Refining and Corporate Safety procedures
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office
