Overview:

Candidate will receive on-the-job training related to the dynamics of the petroleum industry, the specifics of your job assignment, and the use of various software programs. Specific duties may include: analysis of accounting and financial data to prepare proper refinery financial statement journal entries and preparation of financial and operational variance analysis for management. Additionally, you will be given the opportunity to interface and develop collaborative relationships with individuals in the Controller’s Organization located in San Antonio, TX and Findlay, OH.

This position will report to a refinery lead accountant.   

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identifies, analyzes, verifies, interprets and processes financial and operating transactions and data.
  • Maintains records, accounts and ledgers pertaining to various phases of company activity; and prepares related schedules, statements and reports to analyze the results of activity.
  • Exchanges and interprets business information; and promotes effective and timely flow of required operating and financial information.
  • Participate in monthly financial closeout activities.  Prepare monthly financial entries to properly account for refinery expenses and other financial activity.
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations.
  • Participate in the development of refinery’s annual expense budget and monthly updates, and the analysis of actual versus budgeted expenditures.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new procedures and accounting systems, or financial applications as they arise.Assist in special projects as assigned and provide back-up for other accounting functions as required.
  • Maintains records, accounts and ledgers pertaining to various phases of company activity; and prepares related schedules, statements and reports to analyze the results of activity.
  • Strong communication skills are required to effectively receive and distribute information to other accounting department personnel, operational department personnel, various levels of management, governmental agencies, and other MPC locations.
  • Participates in creating and recommending new policies, methods, procedures and spreadsheets designed to improve accounting controls and efficiency.

  • Proven analytical skills
  • Proficient in Excel - creating/modifying spreadsheets, data cleansing, pivot tables & formulas
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with SAP is preferred
  • Proven teamwork ability

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA required
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future
  • Military experience a plus 

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting required
  • Minimum 0-3 years of related experience
