Marathon Petroleum Company (MPC), a recognized leader in the energy industry and a Responsible Care® member (www.marathonpetroleum.com), is seeking a Toxicologist for its Headquarters Health Services Department in Findlay, Ohio. This position offers the opportunity for the right individual to grow in the role as a subject-matter expert in petroleum-related toxicology and product safety areas and regulations with a focus on the preparation and maintenance of hazard communications.

 

Responsibilities:

The incumbent will provide a broad range of toxicology services, including:

  • Identifying, evaluating, classifying and communicating the health-related hazards and risks of MPC products, intermediates, emissions, processes, workplace chemicals and practices;
  • Developing, improving and implementing MPC standards and practices, e.g. community exposure guidelines;
  • Identifying, defining and assessing emerging health/regulatory issues, developing proactive or reactive strategies, providing appropriate technical leadership and forecasting their impact on MPC objectives;
  • Formulating advocacy positions and the interpretation of local/state/federal legislation, regulations or industry consensus standards as well as compliance needs;
  • Acting as the MPC representative during interactions with customers, communities and regulatory agencies on health-related issues;
  • Assisting corporate groups and operating sites with training, auditing and communications;
  • Locating and engaging external consultants and collaborating with internal staff;
  • Conducting qualitative or quantitative health-risk and exposure assessments;
  • Recommending approaches for product stewardship activities and assessing and reducing of health-related risk;
  • Designing, monitoring and evaluating toxicity-related research;
  • Providing toxicology support and communications for incidents with chemical spills or releases and participating in emergency response drills;
  • Supporting MPC acquisition teams;
  • Participation on or coordinating with intradepartmental issue teams, e.g. occupational chemical exposure limits, and trade association or consortia technical and policy workgroups, e.g. American Chemistry Council, American Fuels and Petrochemical Manufacturers and the American Petroleum Institute.

 

Requirements:

  • Candidate must be a self-starter and problem-solver who can work independently or collaboratively with other internal and external professionals.  In addition, the successful candidate must be a team builder, organizer, and program planner who has interpersonal and supervisory skills as well as excellent verbal communication and writing skills for diverse audiences.
  • A Doctorate degree is required in toxicology or allied health fields and the candidate must be certified as a diplomat by the American Board of Toxicology.  Depending on education and background, a minimum of three years of toxicology, product safety, and hazard communication authoring experience is required.  Experience in the petrochemical industry is preferred.

 

  • Background is also preferred in:
    • The basic medical sciences including biochemistry, physiology, and pharmacology;
    • Petroleum and petrochemical application, emissions, chemistry, processing, toxicity, and epidemiology;
    • Hazard communication authorship using OSHA (HazCom 2012) criteria;
    • Toxicological principles and testing methods, e.g. OECD;
    • Chemical and statistical analysis;
    • Knowledge or major state/federal/global toxicity-related chemical regulations e.g. TSCA;
    • Computer literacy especially in regards to Wercs SDS Authoring Module, Microsoft Office Suite, on-line database searching and internet use.
