Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Technical Accounting Consultant is responsible for leading consultations with our internal business partners related to specific technical accounting matters.  A successful candidate will be skilled at researching, documenting, and communicating technical accounting conclusions to our internal business partners that are compliant with US GAAP.  The Technical Accounting Consultant will be a leader within the technical accounting group, will supervise other technical accountants and will have significant interaction with MPC management and MPC's external audit firm.



  • Counsels and advises MPC management on consistent and appropriate application of financial accounting policies and procedures;
  • Leading and performing research and documentation of technical accounting matters related to business transactions such as acquisitions, divestitures, investments in other business entities, and joint ventures;
  • Drafting illustrative policy examples, as necessary, to either improve current policy library or to clarify relevant application of US GAAP to any evolving business practices;
  • Working with cross functional teams on the implementation of new accounting standards;
  • Assisting with quarterly and annual technical accounting assessments, such as reporting unit and segment reporting analysis, goodwill impairment reviews, fair value disclosures, and variable interest entity analysis;
  • Significant interaction with MPC management and responsible for leveraging these interactions to learn the business in order to be able to successfully apply GAAP concepts to our business operations.
  • Interacting with the company's external auditors with respect to highly technical accounting matters;
  • Interacting with the company’s internal auditors.



  • A solid understanding of US GAAP;
  • Experience with GAAP accounting research and the ability to relate US GAAP to practical real-world situations;
  • Proven analytical skills;
  • Superior writing skills as evidenced by relevant commentary on financial reports, issues, etc.;
  • A strong understanding of business and the role accounting plays in both growth and cost control scenarios;
  • Highly collaborative relationship style, adept at working across the organization;
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to discuss key business issues comfortably and credibly with other of organization functions as well as with external auditors;
  • Unflinching integrity, ethics, and the courage to uphold principles;
  • A demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide group of stakeholders.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required.
  • At least 10 years of accounting experience is preferred.
  • CPA is required.
