Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) is seeking a product safety professional within its Toxicology and Product Safety (T&PS) group at MPC’s headquarters in Findlay, OH. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the corporate hazard communication team and toxicologists to promote product safety/stewardship, and to support business units across US, Canada, and Mexico.


Key Responsibilities


  • Liaise with internal stakeholders (Marketing, Environmental, Safety, Product Quality, Analytical Labs, Occupational Hygiene, Legal, etc) to gather information and conduct systematic reviews of existing products and process streams.
  • Compile and organize technical information obtained through various internet & library reference sources and gather internal information from colleagues to create and maintain product safety and SDS libraries.
  • Provide technical advice to business components and respond to inquiries related to product safety, SDSs, and transport classifications of hazardous materials.
  • Support business component coordinators to meet EPCRA/SARA, and TSCA reporting requirements.
  • Conduct internal audit(s) of MPC business components for compliance under HazCom, Prop 65, TSCA, EPCRA/SARA standards.
  • Comply with company standards relating to documentation and record systems.
  • Expected to perform other duties and participate in special projects as required.


Experience and Education


  • Bachelors Science degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Sciences, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of Petrochemical Industry experience.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA HazCom 2012, GHS, Prop 65, EPCRA/SARA, etc.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification for authoring SDSs from AIHA.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain transportation certification (DOT, IATA, IMDG).




  • Strong interpersonal, communication (oral and written), and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects and meet established deadlines.
  • Follow written processes and procedures, and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and manage analytical chemistry datasets.
  • Ability to apply hazard classification schemes and authoring of Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).
  • Familiarity with SDS authoring and management system (WERCS®, MSDSOnline, etc).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to lead technical meetings and effectively document progress and outcomes.
