The Corporate Process Safety Group in the ESS organization is seeking a highly motivated process safety engineer with strong technical and leadership skills. The Corporate Process Safety and Risk Engineer are responsible for performing, reviewing, and managing the technical aspects of Process Safety for the Corporation, including but not limited to PHA, LOPA, facility siting, and RV sizing calculations).  He/she will ensure company-wide compliance with applicable regulatory and corporate standards and support the Organizations in conducting process safety technical analyses to enable proper process safety risk identification and management.


The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to be successful in working in various work settings, including operating and corporate environments.


Key Responsibilities: 

  1. Provide engineering support and technical guidance/assistance to Organizations in areas such as, but not limited to, facility siting modeling, portable building placement, PHA (process hazard analysis), and LOPA (layer of protection analysis).
  2. Conduct and review leak calculations, dispersion models, and quantitative risk models using various tools (e.g. PHAST)
  3. Conduct building reviews for facility siting based on the results of dispersion models.
  4. Stewards process safety risk management efforts per GEN-1010 Risk Calibration Standard in collaboration with Organizations and the Risk Management Oversight Committee.
  5. Support and/or Lead Tier II and Tier III audits and assurance activities for process safety, particularly in the areas of PHA, MOC, PSI, and facility siting.
  6. Facilitate PHAs and lead or participate in incident investigations when needed to support the Organizations
  7. Mentors process safety professionals through project reviews, papers and technical presentations. Develops and delivers training on process safety management and related topics. Advises on interpretation and application of internal and external standards.
  8. Represent MPC at industry PSM meetings; participate in special industry groups and discussions to ensure consistency of MPC’s process safety approaches with the industry; share industry best practices across the Company, and use information as input for the development of programs and practices. 




Education Level: Minimum undergraduate degree in an engineering discipline required.  Chemical Engineering preferred and P.E. desired


Relevant Experience Level: Minimum 10 years engineering experience in process safety management, risk management, process hazard analysis (PHA)/layers of protection analysis (LOPA), and facility siting in refining or petrochemical industries required.  Equivalent experience in other engineering disciplines will be considered.


Computer Proficiencies: Strong computer proficiency including Microsoft Office products (especially Excel), Outlook and the ability to successfully use additional company-specific software applications.
