Reporting to the Assistant Controller, External Reporting & Consolidation Accounting of MPC, the MPC Manager, External Reporting is responsible for MPC’s external reporting and analysis.  The information developed under the direction of this position will be heavily relied upon by Senior Management, Investor Relations, and the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors. The candidate will work with a team of three to four direct/indirect reports. This position will have significant interaction with MPC’s external audit firm.

 

Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) is the nation’s third-largest refiner, with a crude oil refining capacity of approximately 1.8 million barrels per calendar day in its seven-refinery system. Marathon brand gasoline is sold through approximately 5,600 independently owned retail outlets across 19 states. In addition, Speedway LLC, an MPC subsidiary, owns and operates the nation’s second-largest convenience store chain, with approximately 2,730 convenience stores in 21 states. MPC owns, leases or has ownership interests in approximately 10,800 miles of crude and light product pipelines. Through subsidiaries, MPC owns the general partner of MPLX LP, a midstream master limited partnership. Through MPLX, MPC has ownership interests in gathering and processing facilities with approximately 5.9 billion cubic feet per day of gathering capacity, 8 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas processing capacity and 570,000 barrels per day of fractionation capacity. MPC’s fully integrated system provides operational flexibility to move crude oil, NGLs, feedstocks and petroleum-related products efficiently through the company’s distribution network and midstream service businesses in the Midwest, Northeast, East Coast, Southeast and Gulf Coast regions.

 

Specific Responsibilities include:

 

  • Manages and directs the preparation of MPC’s quarterly and annual SEC filings in accordance with GAAP and SEC regulations and reviews quarterly earnings release materials, press releases, investor relations presentations and other external presentations with financial information to ensure accurate and complete information and disclosures.    
  • Responsible for the effective operation of the control environment within the MPC external reporting to ensure financial statements and data are presented fairly and accurately.  This includes activities such as: preparation and presentation of materials for review by MPC’s disclosure review committee, educating company personnel on their shared responsibility for the control environment, and coordinating changes in controls due to system implementation, acquisitions and other changes to the business.
  • Applies experience, knowledge, analytical skills, and leadership skills to solve problems, establish efficient accounting processes/procedures and related controls, and prioritize work to drive greater efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Provides advice on external reporting matters related to various business transactions.
  • Interacts with the company’s external auditors with respect to quarterly reviews and the annual MPC audit.
  • Leads a highly effective team with focus on customer service to internal and external customers.  Responsible for development and training of personnel.

     

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license strongly preferred.
  • Public accounting or SEC reporting experience required.
  • Minimum of 12 years of accounting experience.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of supervisory experience required.
  • Oil and gas industry experience preferred.
  • Understanding of SEC regulations and generally accepted accounting principles and the ability to apply GAAP to new and existing transactions. 
  • Strong understanding of internal controls and ability to select and execute appropriate alternative internal controls when conditions warrant.
  • Ability to work under high pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytic and problem solving skills.
  • Proven ability to improve processes using knowledge of business and systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate at all levels and disciplines of the organization.
