Industrial Hygienist – Marathon Pipe Line


The Industrial Hygiene (IH) Professional will play a key role in providing technical leadership and direction in the industrial hygiene programs for Marathon Pipe Line.  This position will be responsible for facilitating program compliance with all local, state, and federal safety and health regulations. In addition, this role coordinates the industrial hygiene annual monitoring plan and provides subject matter expert support during emergency response incidents. This position provides the opportunity to interact with all levels of management and employees in pipeline operations, Corporate OEH, toxicology, medical services and peer operating component IH Professionals.


The successful candidate must be a highly motivated, customer centered, self-starter, capable of working with limited direct oversight, possess a willingness to travel, make timely decisions, and be capable of expanding beyond the stated responsibilities. Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects concurrently is required. A proven track record of partnering with operations to determine effective control or reduction strategies is required.


General Responsibilities   Anticipates, recognizes, evaluates and controls chemical, biological, radiological and physical health hazards within the business component.


  1. Oversees preparation, coordination and execution of employee exposure monitoring during routine, maintenance and non-routine work activities.
  2. Complete field work including exposure assessments, industrial hygiene monitoring, indoor air quality investigations, responding to employee complaints, and recommending corrective action to minimize exposure risk during routine, non-routine and emergency response incidents.
  3. Collect, review, and summarize exposure assessment and monitoring data to comply with legal requirements, identify potential health stressors, and determine the need for, and effectiveness of, exposure control methods.
  4. Prepare formal reports for management conveying significant findings and recommend specific corrective actions from exposure assessments/monitoring.
  5. Prepare component standards to ensure conformance with corporate standards and procedures for industrial hygiene related topics to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and industry standards.
  6. Develop and deliver training materials on industrial hygiene methods and other industrial hygiene related topics to HES professionals and other employees/contractors.
  7. Serve as the Component Subject Matter Expert in the areas of radiation safety, asbestos management, hexavalent chromium exposure control, manganese exposure control, respiratory protection, emergency response air monitoring techniques, Industrial Hygiene sampling equipment, medical surveillance, ergonomics, etc.
  8. Follow government rulemaking proceedings to ensure that company facilities remain in compliance by responding appropriately to new and/or revised regulations.
  9. Review pertinent scientific literature to keep abreast of technical developments in the field of industrial hygiene.
  10. Actively participate in the Industrial Hygiene Performance Excellence (PX) team and Corporate Air Monitoring Team
  11. Support IT systems and Industrial Hygiene databases and associated improvement projects.
  12. Ensure IH support prior to and during capital project improvement initiatives
  13. Interfaces with internal and external auditors and regulatory agencies 




A Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Chemistry or related discipline and three to five years of experience is required. Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIH) and those with oil and gas industry experience are preferred candidates. Strong written and verbal communication skills, proficient PC skills, and demonstrated skills associated with writing technical reports, procedures, guidance documents, and training materials are required. Estimated travel for the position is 35%.
