POSITION SUMMARY:

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing counseling and environmental legal support including compliance assistance, interpretative guidance, and managing enforcement cases. Specifically, this position will be responsible for a wide variety of legal counseling on environmental matters including negotiations, permitting counseling, contract drafting, due diligence reviews, legal research, advising management and employees, and preventive law counseling. The position entails heavy interaction with Marathon Petroleum business units, governmental agencies and outside counsel.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides professional legal advice, counsel, and guidance, as a practicing attorney at law, to assure that the Company, its assets and its activities are legally safeguarded, are in conformity with all the applicable laws and regulations and will not unduly expose the Company to litigation, penalties or claims.
  • Advises management of the legal aspects of administrative and operational planning of the Company's activities.
  • Plans and develops solutions to existing or potential legal problems involving the Company, and advises management concerning its legal rights and obligations.
  • Advises the management of the Company as to the anticipated legal and other consequences of instituting, prosecuting and defending lawsuits, including arbitrations and administrative agency proceedings. Prepares and tries or supervises the preparation and trial of such lawsuits and proceedings which are instituted or defended by the Company.
  • Develops form contracts and other legal documents and approves the form of all significant contractual arrangements entered into by the Company.
  • Develops and implements programs, conducts presentations, publishes information and participates in other activities to educate Company officers and employees as to the Company's Code of Business Conduct, Company policies and procedures and legal compliance requirements.
  • Participates in continuing legal education programs and other activities as necessary to keep informed of developments in the law, new and proposed statutes and regulations, economic and social issues and other matters of interest to the Company and the energy industry.
  • Coordinate and develop Company's advocacy position on future legislative and regulatory matters and participate in various Industry Trade Organizations in support of the administrative rulemaking process.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Degree Required: J.D.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience 
  • The preferred candidate will be licensed and authorized to practice law in Ohio or another state.
  • Some experience in corporate M&A transactions, joint ventures or other general corporate, limited liability company or limited partnership matters is preferred, but not required.
  • Continued employment will be conditioned upon obtaining and maintaining membership in the Ohio or other State Bar.
