Job Overview:

The IT Business Intelligence Architect will have the opportunity to provide support and be a solution architect for the SAP BI environment at Marathon Petroleum Company.  The candidate will have the ability to work with a strong IT support staff and business partners, and play a vital role in promoting governance, reliability, and usage of the BI environment and promote oversight of the BI roadmap.   Job responsibilities will include both level 2 production support for BW, Business Objects, and Tableau environments, as well as enhancements/new development for BW objects and data models.  It is expected that 80-85% of the support will be dedicated to BW and 10-15% to Business Objects and Tableau.


  • Business Objects – BOBJ 4.1 SP6, 443 BOBJ reports, 27 Universes
  • BW – BW 7.4 on HANA 1.0 Rev 112, 12 daily and 16 monthly data load jobs for Global Procurement, Accounting/Finance, and Plant Maintenance


Job Functions:

  1. Provide level 2 production BW support by assisting with troubleshooting of problems and incidents that cannot be resolved by level 1 teams.  Support will be shared with another team member to balance demands.
  2. BW performance troubleshooting, optimization, and transport coordination.


  1. Coordinate with Basis/Infrastructure team on any needed Level 3 support needs, upgrades, and performance troubleshooting and optimization.


  2. Design and development of BW objects, data models, and BEX queries.


  3. BI architecture and governance oversight


  4. Provide level 2 support for Business Objects environment and toolset, including security administration, server administration, design and creation of universes, and migration of Business Objects reports across environments.  Support will be shared with another team member to balance demands. 


  5. Provide consulting, training, best practices, and design reviews for BW objects and Business Objects reports and universes for level 1 teams.


Job Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree desired.  Prefer major in Computer Science or other IT related major.  At least 5 years of experience with SAP BW with ABAP and 3 or more years experience with SAP Business Objects and/or Tableau.

  • Experience in SAP BW implementation, configuration, testing, and documentation.


  • Strong BW Production Support Experience including load monitoring, troubleshooting & performance tuning.


  • Expertise and experience in ABAP programming related to SAP BW


  • Experience with development of BW structures, BEX queries, and reports related to FICO, Procurement (SRM), and Materials Management, and Warehouse Management functional areas.


  • Experience in designing and building BW structures in both traditional BW and HANA environments - including DSO, Cube, Multiprovider, ODS View, and SPO.


  • Experience with SAP BW 7.4 and HANA 1.0.


  • Experience with Business Objects 4.1 and Universe design using Information Design Tool (IDT).


  • Experience in full lifecycle implementations including requirement gathering, understanding business requirements, and developing technical specifications.


  • Expertise and experience with Business Objects front end tools including Web Intelligence, SAP Business Objects Explorer, Analysis for Office / AOLAP


  • Experience with BI Governance
