POSITION SUMMARY:


The Operations Accounting Manager is responsible for managing a department consisting of supervisors, professional accountants, and division order analysts to ensure transactions are recorded and analyzed in a timely and accurate manner and in accordance with company policies. Primarily accountable for the entire accounting function within assigned department, including internal and external customer service, management reporting and all aspects of the monthly accounting close and monthly invoicing of contractual and physical gas or oil that is gathered, processed and/or NGL fractionation and marketing activity.

 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Provides extensive assistance and direction to supervisors and staff members in carrying out their job responsibilities and group goals.
•Responsible for the management of departmental projects including software, acquisition, divestiture, and others as required.
•Accountable for all aspects of the monthly accounting and close and reporting cycle.
•Ensures adherence to all producer/customer contract terms.
•Ensures transactions are recorded, documented, reviewed and supported in accordance with GAAP, company policies and Sox controls.
•Review and approve monthly estimates, monthly purchase and sales transactions, monthly account reconciliations, and monthly variance results.
•Analyzes and approves performance reports, margin account variance analyses, key operating statistics, price/volume variances and operating results on a monthly basis.
•Ensures accounting processes are completed timely according to planned close schedules.
•Provides development support for new internal controls necessary to meet business requirements and modifies control narratives as appropriate.
•Answers and resolves internal and external customer inquiries, including audit inquiries from External Auditors, Internal Audit, Government Agencies, and producer auditors.
•Provide expertise to others in the MarkWest community for assigned area of responsibility.
•Ensures transactions associated with complex plant allocations and settlements, prior period adjustments, system balancing, inventories, imbalance activity, sales activity, purchase activity, and transportation are accurate and timely.
•Understands the full-range of the applicable operational accounting system (e.g. Quorum Suite and/or Right Angle) functionality, detailed understanding of the specific assets for which the manager is responsible and also has a substantial understanding of the midstream business.
•Continually examines current processes and procedures to establish process improvements, efficiencies and group effectiveness.
•Applies experience, knowledge, analytical skills, and leadership skills to solve issues, establish efficient accounting processes/procedures and controls, and work prioritization.
•Works with other departments to ensure effective communication, consistency, and use of best practices.
•Responsible for all staffing responsibilities.
•Responsible for employee development for staff members..
•Actively participates in the development and coaching of supervisors and staff members to provide appropriate advancement opportunities.
•Position typically has 1-3 direct reports and multiple indirect reports.
•Occasional (1-2 annual) travel to field location.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

•Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in accounting, business or finance required.
•Seven to Ten years of Accounting Experience with three to five years of Supervisory experience.
•Minimum of three to five years of oil and gas industry experience preferred.
•Technical knowledge of the Midstream operations accounting area.
•Quorum/TIPS and/or Right Angle experience preferred.
•Proven ability to manage people with diverse backgrounds.
•Advanced understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and the ability to apply GAAP to new and existing transactions. Must have extensive knowledge of difficult accounting concepts and procedures and ability to apply to daily activities.
•Strong understanding of internal controls and ability to select and execute appropriate alternative internal controls when conditions warrant.
•Thrives in a fast-paced challenging environment.
•Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
•Proficient in use of Excel and Word and have the aptitude to effectively learn company-specific accounting systems.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
