Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s (MPC) Los Angeles Refinery currently has a vacancy for an c in the Reliability Maintenance Department.

The Electrical Reliability Engineer’s primary responsibility is to ensure that plans and processes are in place to appropriately maintain the plant’s electrical equipment and systems throughout its lifecycle in order to reduce safety, environmental and economic risk, while maintaining compliance with all applicable codes and standards. Emphasis is placed on development of the site Equipment Integrity program. They shall work closely with the Area Electrical Engineering team to collaboratively improve and maintain the overall plant electrical system, provide support on high priority electrical issues and enhance each other’s capability through shared learnings. They would also be tasked with supporting maintenance on an as needed basis. The Reliability Electrical Engineer will report to the Electrical Reliability Supervisor. 

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, team-oriented individual who has a background in electrical engineering in industrial systems, preferably in a refining/petrochemical environment. The candidate should have a good understanding of industrial electrical applications up to 5kV class. Familiarity in the topics of electrical safety, hazardous area classification, power distribution and protection, motors and motor controls, electrical studies and industry standards (NEC, NFPA, IEEE, NEMA, API, etc.). They should also have a willingness to assist maintenance with troubleshooting electrical issues in the field and be able to interface with different disciplines and groups throughout the refinery.



  • Provide technical/troubleshooting assistance in resolving electrical design, operation and maintenance problems. Have the competence to recognize when other resources are required and be able to get the appropriate parties engaged.
  • Manage the refinery’s electrical equipment integrity program and preventative maintenance program.
  • Develop projects, and concepts for reliability improvement, prepare reports that monitor and track reliability indicators, provide technical resources and training to support our reliability programs.
  • Maintain and manage the plant’s electrical model utilizing ETAP software, including management of the plant’s electrical equipment arc flash labeling program.
  • Perform and/or review electrical system studies with emphasis on arc-flash analysis, protection and coordination, motor starting and short circuit studies.
  • Communicate with personnel from different disciplines and grade levels, along with outside resources to obtain needed information or resolve issues.
  • Initiate and participate in management of change (MOC) reviews and incident investigations.
  • Support refinery turnarounds, including scope development, planning, reviews, material acquisition and execution of electrical work scopes.
  • Review design drawings and construction packages for maintenance related projects. Participate in technical reviews of equipment vendor drawings.
  • Accountable for management and maintenance of electrical critical equipment list database. Maintain electrical equipment bad actor list.
  • Support factory acceptance testing & site commissioning of electrical projects or major equipment, including during turnarounds.
  • Support refinery in high impact unplanned electrical issues as required.

Minimum/Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in a relevant Engineering discipline from an accredited institution required. 
  • Minimum 4 years of post-degree relevant experience.
  • Willingness and ability to travel in order to fulfill responsibilities of this position. Anticipated travel is 5% of full-time basis



Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • State of CA PE License in applicable field
  • Familiarity with ETAP electrical modeling software
  • Familiarity with electrical maintenance and troubleshooting practices for industrial electrical applications
  • Experience with maintenance of 5kV class or higher, electrical equipment
