Background

This position is part of the L&S Terminals organization in the Health, Environment, Safety & Training (HES&T) department. This position will support nine total facilities, primarily in the Northwest L&S Terminals Area. The assigned facilities will include terminals within Washington, central California, Mandan, North Dakota as well as the Marathon Pipe Line Spokane, Washington assets and Pasco, Washington terminal.

 

The Field Safety Professional provides support for various safety program functions and will include asphalt and light product terminals as well as pipeline locations. This position will involve a significant amount of travel throughout the area of coverage for support of operations and projects.

 

Responsibilities

  1. Serve as an advocate for front line employees to support, educate and help them work safely. 
  2. Continuously assess safety risks in order to develop and execute mitigation plans as needed. This includes reviewing field work activities and work permits to correct deficiencies and identify improvement opportunities.
  3. Conduct safety audits to assure compliance with federal and state safety regulations and conformance to internal company safety standards and the Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS).
  4. Engage in project-related work by participating in the review / approval of Management of Change evaluations, Commissioning, Decommissioning, and Recommissioning (CDRs), lift plans, and review and input on project safety plans.
  5. Partner with program coordinators to assist in administering and continually improving safety programs such as industrial hygiene, contractor safety, life critical programs (e.g. confined space entry, hot work, elevated work, and energy isolation) as well as other programs.
  6. Promote programs such as behavior-based safety, hazard recognition / mitigation, Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), etc. to continually improve the safety culture of the organization.
  7. Effectively engage, communicate, and support all levels of organization regarding safety management and safety performance matters that involve/impact the field.
  8. Communicate safety expectations to contractors and conduct contractor field performance audits.
  9. Respond to local emergencies within the coverage area and serve within the incident command structure (ICS) during any emergency responses to provide air monitoring, development of health and safety plans, and other actions as needed.
  10. Assist in and/or lead incident investigations as needed.
  11. Participate and/or lead safety meetings and assist locations with continuously improving the quality and value of the meetings.
  12. Provide safety-related input in the development and review of operating procedures.
  13. Effectively manage assigned safety programs by serving as the program administrator (programs are yet to be determined).
  14. Proactively mentor and seek opportunities to involve others in complex situations.

 

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related discipline is required. 
  • 8+ years of relevant experience required
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is preferred.
  • Additionally, strong written and verbal communication skills, proficient computer and Microsoft office skills, and the ability to write technical reports, procedures, and training materials are required.

 

The successful candidate must also be a highly motivated, customer-centered self-starter that can work with limited direct oversight. They should have excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, and an adaptability for change. This includes being capable of expanding beyond the stated responsibilities. The successful candidate should be able to think strategically and work towards continual improvement of internal processes and programs by using strong interpersonal skills to influence individuals and teams.

 

Location: The office location will be in Auburn, WA with nearby locations considered.
